What are content standards?

Both the United States and California educational systems are based on academic content standards. These standards outline what students should know at each grade level. Additionally, they form the basis of what educational goals and policies are set and help guide classroom instruction, curriculum adoption, and academic assistance. Each state and school district establishes and monitors its own standards.

There are four major content areas in which standards are set: English/Language Arts, Mathematics, History/Social Science, and Science. To get a copy of California's academic content standards, visit the California Department of Education's website:
