What is Financial Aid?

This material can be used to answer questions you might receive from your student. Use it as a starting point for your discussion. The material is written from the perspective of the student and the information may be duplicated in your area.

At first thought, it may seem that college is too expensive. What's true is that some colleges do cost more than others, but what's important to keep in mind is that the actual cost of college really depends on where you plan to go. Another key fact to consider is that very often there is money available to help students pay for college. This money is called financial aid.

Financial comes from the word "finance" which is another word for "money." "Aid" is another word for "help;" therefore, "financial aid" is "money help." Financial aid is money that students can be awarded to help pay for college expenses. Financial aid can help pay for your college tuition and fees, room and board, books, supplies, and transportation.
